The MAXSTER
|
Ok this morning Max and I were out on our walk..and we had stopped so Max could play with his girlfriend when this older man approached and said.He asked about Max and wondered if he was purebred or not? When I told him yes..he said I had to watch out as all GSD around 5 -7 yrs old start to develop cancer b/c of inbreeding and that he had lost two females one at and one at 10 to cancer.
He said neither were spade but that does not make a difference adn that GSD were just prone to cancer. Now the other dog owner (Max's girlfriend who is all of 8 inchs tall) cut the conversation off and said he had heard it was just the luck the dog and that it was true of NA GSD but not European lines and in any case Max looked healthy and strong, so just to drop it.
Of course this is not what you want to hear in the morning when your giant is trying to play nice with his mini gal pal....but I had heard way back, and of course now wives tales etc get all caught up in this .. that was true more of unneutered/ spade dogs in general...but who the heck knows. I was just wondering what other people knew on this topic.
Speaking of health...does anyone know of a good vet in Toronto that is comfortable with Shepherds..especially ones who have developed an aversion to vets afer a problem in emergency where he was mishandled quite badly ?
I am looking for an alternative vet for Max that is comfortable with large breeds like sheps, and won't stress him out, but has a good knowledge of holisitc options as well. Max's current vet is North of the city adn it is a bit a of a travel up there, plus she has never been comfortable with Max as he is a well a very very high energy doggy and very vocal about it.
He likes everyone else in her office and has even learned to ignore the cat and the bird which is HUGE for Max, b/c he HATES CATS but after the last visit I realized Max and his vet do not get along AT ALLl..and as I need a vet that is totally comfortable with Max so that his eyes can be checked b/c of the Panus I need to look of another one. The last time we went she didn't look at his eyes up close just said they seemed fine...and this was after she had me put on a muzzle too....and that is just not acceptable to me as that is something that needs to be monitored.
If anyone knows of a good vet, or has heard of one can you let me know. Thanks
Helen
