feeding frenzies are quite common with puppies due to the nature of the way they're fed. usually 2-3 puppy pan saucers to a litter depending upon the size. puppies frenzy in an attempt to ensure they get their fair share, put the food bowl down and it's gone in 10 secs or less.
At 5 wks I wanted to experiment during a feeding session to see if I could #1) get the puppies to not frenzy, #2) get the puppies to sit using click/treat, #3) have the puppies remain sitting while others were getting fed. It took about 15 mins. the first time before the puppies finally settled in and started to acknowledge the C/T part of the exercise. They then started to remain sitting, and not jumping for the food even though it was passed either over their heads to another pup or to the pup beside them. In addition those pups who thought they were being missed actually would move around to the front of the group and present with a sit and heads up for feeding.
I wasn't sure if the pups would react to the C/T at 5 wks but still wanted to try it. Amazed at how well they did. I've continued doing this same routine for at least one or two meals a day. Initally the pups frenzy as of course they're hungry but they soon settle into the routine once the initial hunger pangs are addressed. The actual action of sitting is coming sooner and sooner each time.
