Why?

Why after months and months of "downs" with hand motion, is Max suddenly a little confused to the hand motion, but not the verbal? For month at now as you know Heather if you do the motion for "down" with you hand Max was awesome at it.  He could do it with or with out verbal prodding.  Now suddenly, if you do the down motion, he sits or tries to "Go To" . But if I say down...boom he drops (not very gracefully, the most graceful sit, the most ungraceful down) I can't figure out why he is confused.  We are going back to the initial way of teaching it and I hope this works to get him back on board..but I am a little miffed at why he would be confusing something we practice ever day on it's own.  I don't mix the "go to " commands with anything. Not sure what I've done here? Huh

Sometimes they have a basic brain fart.  That is, they will confuse a behaviour that is quite well known with something else.  This can be caused by a couple of things such as a slight change in your body posture or signal, change in locations, or you may have been training more with the verbal than you thought.  Perhaps you've been training the "go to" and the sit a lot lately and he's mixing them up with the down.  It happens not to worry, just back track a little to the abc's and then bring him up quickly to where he originally was.  Only progress on your successes.

Thanks I did back track...and it seems to be working for the down..now we are having a bit of confusion on go to mat...but we'll back it up again.  I think you are right though I was using more verbal than I thought...oops!

Max's mom is a little dunce lately.

oh big news though I got MAx to lie down at the washroom door and not move for 15 min while I got ready this morning..after 15 he sort of got up/crawled to my feet and mouthed them...but hey progress.....
