O.k. so I want to know. Some people believe that if you put food in front of a shep they won't stop eating until it is gone and that is why there are so many overweight sheps out there.
Now with both Max no matter how much food is in his bowl he does not eat all of it. He will eat a maximum of two cups of Holistic a Day. At last check he was 67-68 lbs. However with Max if he has had more treats in a day than normal, he simply won't eat his food. I'd say on a weekly basis he probably eats 5 out of the seven meals.
Someone had told me it was unaltered males that behave that way, but once neutered most gain weight. Well Baron was unaltered and maybe went up and down (winter heavier) by 2 pounds at most (72 lbs) throughout his life. Max has been neutered but still behaves the same way as Baron did. So I am confused are these guys the odd balls, or is this the norm?

Helen, Eating and weight gain habits all depends on the individual dog. Some will continue to eat until their stomachs explode, others self-regulate. Being altered doesn't necessarily mean weight gain, it's usually because the owners aren't as active with their dogs so the dogs put on weight. Weight gain can also mean that the owners are not feeding according to activity levels ie; their young dogs are very active so they feed lots, as they age they don't adjust or during the winter when the dogs are less active forget to perhaps cut back just a little to compensate for the sedentary life during the winter months.
Mica will quite often only eat a portion of her dinner or at times even walk away from dinner. Kai on the other hand will eat anything and everything that is put in front of him, he's a real glutton and loves his food. Luka is also a food hound and finishes her dinner looking for what Mica has left behind.

Although Spirit is a very large boy, he sometimes eats only a mouthful or two and walks away. Because I don't let him eat whenever he wants the food is picked up in about 10 minutes if he isn't eating. Than because I feed him 2 x a day, I will put it down again. Sometimes he will finish it all off, sometimes not. I feed him the holistic food and he is only supposed to get 4 cups divided into two portions. But, he eats above that amount by about 3 cups. He sometimes eats only 1 cup a day. So, I guess it just depends on what they feel like. Dee

All right I was asked by a lady with a GSD what I feed Max b/c he is so lean. I told her Holistic b/c it is healthy choice for him and she wanted to know why and what is the difference between dog food...what should we be looking for?
Well I'm not so sure myself so can anyone give the breakdown on food..what the labels mean and how much ie protein etc should be in the brand you are feeding?
Thanks Helen
